Due to the extreme temperature changes recently the freeze/thaw is in effect at the Bridge and the Ceiling is once again falling. Be careful if you go there and avoid parking in the lot under there if you value your car.

It would be safer to just not go there for awhile until the weather gets better.

Why may concrete deteriorate from freeze thaw actions?

Deterioration of concrete from freeze thaw actions may occur when the concrete is critically saturated, which is when approximately 91% of its pores are filled with water. When water freezes to ice it occupies 9% more volume than that of water. If there is no space for this volume expansion in a porous, water containing material like concrete, freezing may cause distress in the concrete. Distress to critically saturated concrete from freezing and thawing will commence with the first freeze-thaw cycle and will continue throughout successive winter seasons resulting in repeated loss of concrete surface.

Pump Bump Progress!!! HELP WANTED!!!

The new pump bump in the bowl is almost ready to pour!!! Thanks to everyone who came out to No Coast for the fundraiser to build this thing! So far looks like it will come super mellow down the center pillar and across the floor to the middle and T off with a twinkie on the end. Still plenty of room for you figure eighter's over the D box and the door is still open for all you vertwall pushers as well.

Tomorrow, Thursday January 19th 2012, we will be at the bridge from around 8am until putting the rebar and finishing touches down to get ready for the pour on

Friday, January 20th 2012.

Depending on the weather it should be ready to roll by MONDAY!!!

KHVT STL Skatepark update...

Some of you may have heard about KHVT's move to purchase an LRA property on Morganford. After attending and presenting to several of the area's Neighborhood Associations, meeting with Alderman Howard several times, and meeting with the STL Parks Directors over the last 6 months we were able to get approval and recommendations from all that we met with including the Director of the Street Dept.

We then approached the LRA about the property that the neighborhood suggested would be a good fit for a skatepark. It turned out that the land had recently been an old gas station and the city paid to have the gas tanks and everything removed so that it would pass all EPA standards. This cost the City a lot of money. We low balled the offer we made to them as per the advise of our co-conspirators and the local officials. The LRA did not budge... They would like around $38,000. We were hoping to Spend around $50,000 on the whole project! After donated material and volunteer labor we would still be cutting it close.

So its back to the drawing board for a bit on the Morganford park but now Alderman Howard has vowed that "this will happen" in her ward so that's good. She is currently looking into some other options as far as a possible lease situation.

We have also been pursuing other areas of the city as well and are currently working on a deal through Wash. U in the Grove neighborhood. Several properties have been identified for possible donation to KHVT. They are very excited about the possibility of adding a skatepark to there neighborhood and would like to be the First in the city!

With all this going on we still need help at our Kingshighway park. We still need to pick up trash and paint over the graffiti. We will be working on the pump bump this Sunday and hopefully pouring it next week. For more info on upcoming build days email us at

Bob Cassilly, The local visionary behind the St. Louis City Museum passed away yesterday. Bob was a TRUE DIY hero! He did his own thing always and made St. Louis a more beautiful and creative place. On top of his wonderful sculptures that are known internationally he also has helped the Kingshighway Skatepark by donating materials. His tenacity and vision of a more beautiful city was an inspiration to KHVT. You will be missed Bob. RIP

OK, so they didn't find a cure for cancer or resolve the ongoing crisis in Libya. But the founders of the Kingshighway Skatepark still get a shot-out in the August issue of Popular Mechanics -- they're one of ten sets of Hometown Heroes honored for showing the rest of us "Ten Ways to Change the World (Starting in Your Own Backyard)."

The DIY skatepark -- winner of the RFT's 2010 "Best Place to Skate" award and written up in this blog post -- is honored for the way it turned "derelict land" into something positive for the community.

Founders Zac DelCortivo and Kyle Crandall earn special praise.
As Popular Mechanics explains,

The space beneath a city bridge can be a dumping ground and a magnet for crime and sketchy characters. The area under the Kingshighway Bridge in St. Louis was like that. But skateboarders Zac DelCortivo and Kyle Crandall saw opportunity there. They held fundraisers -- a concert, an art show and more -- to pay for materials...and started building a monster DIY skate park.

The story, sadly, isn't online -- but you can find the magazine on newsstands now. Other Hometown Heroes showing us slackers ways to change the world are Seattleites who opened a tool library, a Wisconsin dude who repairs old bikes and donates them to the needy and Jordan Grant of Columbia, Missouri, a National Guard member who served in Iraq and now builds computers and gives them away to people too poor to afford one.

We need to get some things in order and tidy up for the upcoming pour at the bridge!!! We plan on pouring the rest of the bowl including wall out of the shallow end and a hip to cap the riddler pocket Thursday, July 7th and our normal crew will be a little short so mark your calender because we need all the help we can get!!!

Unfortunately most of our normal KHVT building crew have to work our regular jobs until the afternoon tomorrow but It will be all hands on deck around 3pm and into the evening to get the new forms in the bowl.

If you can make it out earlier here are a few things you can do to help on your own!

1. Pick up trash and dump trash cans into the dumpster

2. Sweep up gravel and debris and put it into the fill pile

3. Clean up parking lot and rearrange brick piles in parking lot

4. Repair drain mesh from the last storm and clean out drains

Thanks for helping out! Remember this is our spot so lets keep it tight!

Peter Mathews was a local ripper who tragically lost his life last year in a car accident. His friends and family decided that a great way to remember him would be to have a benefit in his honor and donate the money to our Skategarden Project!!! Thank you all for supporting St. Louis Skateboarding and coming out to our GSD 2011 events!!!

With all the shredding comes a lot of trash. We are very close to having a few new spots and the last thing we need is for the powers that be to come checking out our bridge and seeing all the trash! Please take a few minutes while your shredding to pick up some trash and put it in the dumpster and dump the trash cans. Every little bit helps!!!

Also we will be cleaning up and putting up forms for the next pour on Thursday June 30th.

We will be there all day and there is plenty to do so don't be shy and come out and help us get it done!!!! Bring shovels, brooms, gloves, gardening equipment, drills, 2x4's, plywood, wheelbarrows and of course your shred stick for break time sessions!!!!

Joplin TORNADO RELIEF INFO

Most people in Saint Louis know someone from Joplin Mo. or even have relatives there. The Tornado's that came through there last week nearly leveled the whole City. The survivors are going to need a lot of help cleaning up. If you would like to get involved and help these poor people in there time of need here are a few contacts via the Jolly Roger Skateboards web site.

"The Bridge" in Joplin is a pick-up and drop-off location for supplies going to help victims of the tornado that just hit Joplin, Mo. Their address is 3405 South Hammons Blvd Joplin Mo. If you would like to help you can give them a call at 417-206-6886.

Here are four other ways that you can help:
***American Red Cross
The Red Cross has opened a shelter at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin and is providing residents with relief supplies, including soap, toothbrushes, tarps and rakes. Mail donations of money to the American Red Cross, St. Louis Chapter, 10195 Corporate Square, St. Louis, Mo. 63132. Write "Joplin" in the memo field of personal checks.

***Salvation Army
The Salvation Army is operating four mobile canteens, each of which can provide hot meals to 1,000 people a day. It is seeking bulk donations of nonperishable food and water from businesses or other large donors. Individuals can mail donations of money to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 21787, St. Louis, Mo. 63109-0787. Write "Joplin" in the memo field of personal checks.

***Catholic Charities
Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri is working on emergency and intermediate housing for people made homeless by the storm. Mail donations to Catholic Charities, P.O. Box 952393, St. Louis, Mo. 63195-2393. Write "Joplin" in the memo field of personal checks.

***St. Charles Chamber of Commerce
The chamber is collecting donations of bedding, clothing, food, water, diapers and other items for shipment to Joplin by members of Impact Church St. Louis. Items should be delivered to the chamber's office, 2201 First Capitol Drive, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Thursday. The collection is to be shipped Friday morning.

KHVT is proud to sponsor Slalom St. Louis club, The Daggers. They are having there 9th annual ISSA (International Slalom Skateboarding Association) sanctioned Race on May 28th and 29th at Tower Grove Park. If you would like to sign up or for more info

We recently received this Letter of Support from the Director of the St. Louis

Department of Streets Todd Waelterman. Since he is in charge of all the streets in the entire city, he is involved in almost all aspects of city planning and with all the City officials including the Mayor. The fact that he stands with us in the quest for more free public skate opportunity's in the City is a milestone and will definitely help our cause! They are starting to listen to us and we are constantly scheduling more meetings to plead our case. The Hermann's Hole Skatefest III is a 3 day campout celebration of Hermann Hole's 3rd birthday. In the past it has been an invite only event but this year we will be opening up to the public for the weekend! Hermann's Hole is the Midwest's best and most exclusive DIY skatepark. The Pour is on for tomorrow but the plans have changed a little... sry... Truck should arrive around noon with 3 yds. We will need plenty of people, shovels and wheel barrows to move the crete into place. Bring any shovels, gloves, wheel barrows, people and trowels or mags you might have if you wanna get down. Who knows? Maybe you'll learn something!

Here is a great example of a Community Skategarden Project. This is almost exactly what we at KHVT are trying to do in St. Louis. A project like this not only makes a great place to skate for skaters by skaters but it also breaks down a lot of the social barriers between skaters and there community by bringing everyone together for a common goal! Todd Waelterman, Director of the St. Louis Street Department and Joe Vollmer Alderman of the 10th ward say our bridge still has at least 2 years left and they are willing to work with us towards building new spots!!!! Starting Sunday April 3rd at 1pm KHVT will be holding FREE Sk8 101 Training classes once a month for beginners of all ages at the Kingshighway Skatepark! We will have a short informational class @ 1pm then break off into several groups for hands on instruction from some of the KHVT local rippers! We will also have snacks and drinks and as always we will be passing around the donation jar! No pads are required but they are recommended.

The first Night Light Session of the year will be on Saturday March 12 around 7:30!

There is a twist! We at KHVT have been debating if we should continue to put more money into the bridge with its imminent destruction upon us. We also have a lot of projects on the horizon that are going to take every penny we have and more but, that pocket in the bowl would be so sweet to skate this summer. So we have devised a plan! We estimate it will only cost $300-$400 to finish the shallow pocket and come down the waterfall with it, so to raise that money we have decided to panhandle for any small donations you are willing to give at the next couple night sessions and Skate 101 events. If everyone gave $5 we could be skating that pocket by the end of April! Also all donations received through our PayPal tab to the right for the next month will be used for the KH bowl! TELL EVERYONE you know to ante up!!!

Our first fundraiser for the year will be a classic bracket style Game of S.K.A.T.E.!

We are going to have 2 divisions, 15+ and 14 and under. Prizes for top skaters in both divisions!

Registration at 7pm and the games should start around 7:30pm.

The event will be held at Ramp Riders @ 2324 Salena, St. Louis, MO 63104

Helmets required (available for rent)

We will also have raffles all night for prizes!

Admission is a $10 donation.

We had taken a break from the fundraising to focus on our future projects but that will be coming to an end soon!! We are currently working with the city to find a few suitable spots for us to begin working on our St. Louis Skate Garden project as well as a few private locations!!! We still have some dollars left in the fund but if we want to make our ideas become reality its gonna take a lot of LOOT!!! So starting in April we will be bringing you, the skaters of STL, some sick events!!!

The sky is falling at the Bridge... The harsh freeze thaw of the winter is trying to cut our last summer short... From the spine splitter to the railroad tracks is where the majority of the debris is falling. Watch where you park your car or even park on Bischoff. We will be bringing a ladder and knocking the loose stuff down periodically through out the spring. Just keep your heads up and BE CAREFUL!!!

We have been talking with local city officials about taking over some abandon spots within the city limits and building "skate gardens" on them! Our plan is to take these areas clean them up and turn them into functional skate areas! We still need more spots to submit, the more we find the better our choices! The original plan b spot is unfortunately a no go because its under an interstate which is controlled by the state and not the city.

This is what we are looking for....

Run down lots

within the city limits of St. Louis

existing concrete or asphalt is ok

dirt lots are ok

lots in more commercial or industrial areas are better for noise issues

areas that look very run down

city owned is preferable

With these factors in mind, take a look around when your driving around. Eye sore areas are the best spots because anything in its place would make it better! A physical address of something close and brief description will help the most. We have a very good contact at the city that is willing to work with us so either post the spot on KHVT St. Louis Facebook page or email them to us at kings.highway@yahoo.com! All submissions will be considered so get HUNTING!!!!!

Check out this article from STLtoday.com. STLtoday, Kingshighway Bridge to be rebuilt. Its sad news but we all knew it was just a matter of time. Look at it like this though, we have proven to the city that we need a place to skate. Even though it sucks we can turn this situation around and use it to our advantage! KHVT has been working on some new sites and will be approaching the city about a new park in the near future. Stay tuned for info. We are also in the middle of planning the next couple fundraising events so stay tuned for that info as well. WE WILL NOT GIVE UP!!! We have proven that with all your support we can make things happen and we will continue to do just that! Lets make this a summer to remember at KHB and shred the old bridge to death! Literally!

With the looming threats of our bridges demise, KHVT has been feverishly searching out new spots to develop. If anyone has ideas, spots or private property that you think would be a good place for a new park please email us at kings.highway@yahoo.com. Also we are in need of some more members to our team. We are currently looking for anyone with experience in grant writing, accounting, fundraising, sales/donation solicitation, skateboarding advocacy and non profit work to help take our organization to the next level! We are a 501c3 accredited non profit organization but at this time we are only excepting volunteers. If you are interested or know someone that might be, send a brief informal resume of experience that would apply to kings.highway@yahoo.com . Helping us out would be a great resume builder and will give you a chance to give back to our community! We will take all the help we can get! We have a massive site in the works for a new park but we are still in the early stages so i cannot give out any details just yet but know that St. Louis skateboardings future is looking very bright, or should i saw dark?!?!? hint hint.....
